I have had good luck with the Z boards myself with an i5-2500
I currently have 8gb ram and havent run into an issue yet in gaming were I needed more.
My video is a EVGA 680 SSC 2gb.
I also do not OC at all.
My setup runs all games really great.Even though I cant max out GTAV, it still looks great.Video ram is stopping me from higher graphics in GTAV
Most all games dont use more than 4 cores currently.I actually do not know of one that uses more right now.But a game that pledged for on Kickstarter,Star Citizen claims it will scale the game based off of hardware. So if you have an i7 you will benefit from it,if its true or not I dont know, game still has a year or 2 for release.Something to think about for future proof PC.
Nvida cards, the 2 that are on the higher range is the 970 and 980.
I think the 970 runs around $300 and the 980 around $500.970 is a good card from what I hear, but im still running the 680 without issues.Maybe another year or 2 from now I'll get a 980,unless they release a new card then I dunno...lol.
If I were to build a system right now I would go with:
Asus Z board,if 97 is current then yes
Intel i7
16gb ram
Nvidia 980 I prefer single cards and not SLI,so I always get the more powerful card
